Name: Sawyer Denn
Age: 4
Home: Marengo, IL
How long have you been involved with horses and how did you get started?
I guess I got involved with horses when I was two weeks old because that is when I started working in the barn with my mom. She rigged this backpack contraption so that I was right with her while she was cleaning stalls, dragging the arena, turning horses out and feeding. She didn’t know it at the time because I couldn’t talk yet, but I couldn’t WAIT to ride!
What are your favorite horse activities/disciplines?
I love to trot! But my pony and I do many other things together. He plays in the sand box with me and pushes my tractor. He also takes me for walks which is really nice of him. He knows I need the exercise.
Tell us about the horses in your life.
My mom and dad own a boarding stable, so we have a lot of horses here. I like all of them. After my 4th birthday, a wonderful lady named Naomi let us take her pony Ocho and bring him home with us. He is my favorite because I can do whatever I want with him and when I go out to his pen he comes right up to me. He is an 11-year-old Pinto pony and he is my best friend!
Do you belong to any horse-related clubs/organizations?
Not yet but I will when I get older!
What is your biggest challenge with horses?
Staying on by myself! When Ocho trots I laugh so hard I about bounce right off! Trotting makes me giggle and I love it!
What is your most memorable horse-related moment (so far)?
When we went to pick Ocho up Naomi brought him to meet us in a red trailer. When she took him out of the trailer, I walked right over and took the lead rope, and walked right into our trailer. I had never loaded a horse before but Ocho knew he was meant to go with me and he jumped right up in the trailer because he wanted to!
Who do you look up to in the horse world?
My mom because she does everything with horses and she knows a lot about them.
What have horses taught you?
That it hurts if they step on your foot!
What other activities/interests do you enjoy besides horses?
I love tractors and cars and playing my game!
What grade are you in and what are your future plans?
I’m not in school yet but I will go to Kindergarten next year! In the future I want to be able to ride Ocho very fast and to drive a combine!
